Algerian authorities have condemned calls by members of the Israeli government to annex the West Bank. This was stated by Algeria's Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Amar Bendjama.
“We strongly condemn the demands by Israeli officials to annex the West Bank [of the Jordan River], as this constitutes a blatant violation of international law,” the diplomat told Qatar's Al Jazeera. According to Bendjama, such plans by Israeli officials “threaten any prospects for peace.”
Algeria is currently serving as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council.
In November, Israel's Minister of National Security and leader of the far-right party Otzma Yehudit (“Jewish Power”), Itamar Ben-Gvir, criticized the International Criminal Court's decision to issue arrest warrants for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. In response, Ben-Gvir proposed extending Israeli sovereignty over the entire West Bank. Meanwhile, Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced that he had instructed preparations for a possible annexation of parts of the West Bank by 2025, citing Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election.
