Algeria Expels 12 French Diplomats

14 April

Algeria has ordered 12 French diplomats to leave the country within 48 hours, according to French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, as reported by Le Figaro. The expelled individuals include both diplomatic and administrative staff linked to France’s Ministry of the Interior.

This move is reportedly a response to the recent detention in France of three Algerian nationals, who were arrested on April 11 on suspicion of committing offenses on French soil. Barrot emphasized that Algeria's action "will not go unanswered."

The development adds to a series of diplomatic tensions between the two countries. In July 2024, Algeria recalled its ambassador from Paris after France endorsed Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara as the only viable resolution to the long-standing territorial dispute — a stance that directly contradicts Algeria’s longstanding support for Sahrawi self-determination.

Despite efforts to repair relations — including a meeting in April 2025 between Barrot and Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune where both sides vowed to restart bilateral cooperation — this latest incident underscores the fragile and complex nature of Algerian-French relations.
