Algeria Reports 400% Increase in Terrorist Attacks in Africa Over a Decade

22 January

Terrorist attacks in Africa have surged by 400% over the past decade, according to Algerian Foreign Minister Ahmed Attaf. Speaking at a UN Security Council ministerial meeting in New York focused on countering terrorism in Africa, Attaf highlighted the alarming growth of terrorist activities on the continent. The meeting was held under Algeria's presidency as a non-permanent member of the Security Council.

“The figures reveal a shocking 400% increase in terrorist attacks in Africa over the last decade, accompanied by a 237% rise in fatalities linked to terrorism,” Attaf stated.

Attaf emphasized that the Sahel region has become the epicenter of global terrorism. “In recent years, 48% of all terrorism-related deaths worldwide have occurred in the Sahel region, compared to just 1% in 2007,” he noted.

The minister also shared sobering statistics for 2024: during the first nine months of the year, Africa experienced over 3,200 terrorist attacks, resulting in more than 13,000 deaths.

“While the terrorist threat has diminished in other parts of the world, it has significantly escalated on our continent,” Attaf concluded.
