01 August 2022

Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune said the republic is interested in joining BRICS.

"Algeria has almost all the qualifications to join BRICS, and it is strongly interested in joining this alliance," Tebboune told reporters on Sunday night. His words were quoted by the Algeria Press Service news agency.

Tebboune also noted that joining BRICS would allow Algeria to avoid participating in "bipolar conflicts."

In June 2022, Argentina and Iran applied to join BRICS. Later, Purnima Anand President of the international BRICS forum, said that Egypt, Saudi Arabia and Turkey are also planning to apply for membership in the union. According to her, the discussion and possible decision on the admission of some of these countries can be expected already at the next summit.

The BRICS includes Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The goal of the association, established in 2006 at the initiative of Russia, is the development of all-round cooperation between the member countries.
