Ambassador of India summoned to Iranian Foreign Ministry over scandal of insulting Prophet Muhammad

06 June 2022

The Iranian MFA issued a note of protest to the Indian ambassador in Tehran because of the statements of the representative of the ruling Indian party Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Nupur Sharma, considered in Muslim countries as insulting to the Prophet Muhammad. The Mehr News Agency reported this on Sunday.

According to it, the ambassador said that the position expressed by the BJP representative does not reflect the opinion of the Indian government, which has great respect for all religions. In addition, he said, Sharma is not a civil servant and has only held a position in the party. After the scandal broke, she was fired.

According to India's NDTV, the BJP leadership has suspended Sharma's membership in the party, expelling her from the core membership. Qatar and Kuwait have also issued notes of protest to India's ambassadors, and several other Muslim countries and organizations, including Pakistan and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, have condemned the remarks of the BJP representative.

Sharma appeared on Indian TV at the TV debate and in the context of discussion of some incidents in the country made some statements about Islam and the Prophet Muhammad which were offensive to Muslims. Later, as NDTV notes, Indian National Congress Party member Naveen Jindal posted a message on Twitter that also turned out to be unflattering to Muslims. After a while he deleted it due to a wave of criticism directed at him.
