Ankara Bans Public Gatherings Until April 1

25 March

Authorities in Ankara have imposed a ban on public demonstrations, rallies, and gatherings from March 26 to April 1, according to an official statement from the governor’s office.

“All mass gatherings, whether indoors or outdoors, including demonstrations, marches, press statements, sit-ins, petition drives, and similar activities, as well as the distribution of leaflets and hanging of banners, are prohibited from 12:00 AM on March 26 until 11:59 PM on April 1,” the statement read.

The decision follows previous restrictions on mass protests in Ankara, Istanbul, and Izmir amid growing demonstrations over the March 23 arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. Since his detention on March 19, daily rallies and protests have taken place across Turkey in support of İmamoğlu, with some escalating into clashes between demonstrators and police.
