Antonov: Russia-Africa Summit sparks 'serious irritation' in Washington

28 July 2023

According to Russian Ambassador to Washington Anatoly Antonov, the second Russia-Africa summit being held in St. Petersburg is causing serious irritation to the United States.

"The Americans, especially in the last week, have made numerous efforts to ensure that as few Africans as possible come to visit us. However, the summit has started, is going well, and I cannot hide that this is causing serious irritation in Washington," he said on Channel One.

According to the Russian diplomat, the US is making significant efforts to downplay the importance of the events taking place in St. Petersburg. "They are closely watching and anticipating the outcome, wondering if Russia will succeed in making a decisive breakthrough in developing relations with African states," Antonov added.

The ambassador mentioned that he has already spoken with colleagues from the African diplomatic corps, and they have expressed a very positive assessment of Russia's efforts in welcoming the distinguished guests. "They particularly highlight the fact that President Vladimir Putin is in constant contact with the guests. Colleagues have observed the careful and respectful treatment of the guests, and, most importantly, they recognize that Russia is not opposed to anyone, but is committed to promoting prosperity and friendship with African states and the Russian Federation," the ambassador emphasized.
