AP: ousted Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita was hospitalized

02 September 2020

Former Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita, who was removed from his post by the military in August, has been hospitalized. He is in one of the Republic's private clinics, the Associated Press reported.

AP sources do not provide additional information about Keita's condition. It is also unknown whether the former head of state will be moved abroad for medical treatment.

On August 27, the Malian  Journal du Mali reported that the former President left the Kati army base, where he had been held since August 18, and was escorted by a special forces unit to his home in the capital, Bamako, which served as his residence while in office. Keita's release was one of the main demands of the delegation of the Economic Community of West African Countries (ECOWAS) led by former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan, who met with Keita on August 22 at the Kati base. The latter then said that he did not intend to return to the post of President because of "unstable health". Keita's captors, in turn, said they were ready to allow him to return to his home in Bamako or go abroad for medical treatment.

In Mali, a military coup took place on August 18, which began with an insurgency at the Kati military base near the capital, Bamako. The military seized the General staff, arrested the country's top leadership, including the President of the Republic, and formed the National Committee for the Salvation of the People. Under pressure, Malian President Ibrahim Boubacar Keita announced his resignation, as well as the dissolution of the government and Parliament. During a visit last week to Bamako by an ECOWAS delegation, the military said they intended to keep power in their hands for the next three years. At the same time, they intend to appoint an interim President of the country from among the military.
