Arab League Chief: Cutting Ties with Israel Not a Wise Policy

29 May

The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, has stated that severing diplomatic relations with Israel is not a prudent course of action in the context of the ongoing Middle East conflict.

“Breaking off relations is not a wise policy when it comes to negotiating with parties,” Aboul Gheit told the Spanish newspaper El País. “Without diplomatic ties and channels of communication, it would be impossible to achieve anything with Israel,” he added.

Commenting on the May 25 meeting in Madrid, which brought together representatives from both Arab and European countries, Aboul Gheit emphasized its significance, noting the participation of nations such as the UK, Italy, and France for the first time.

“The discussions focused on calling for an end to mass killings and accusing Israel of using hunger as a tool to forcibly displace the population of Gaza,” he said. “We all agreed — including the European countries I mentioned — that Israel's behavior should be considered criminal under international law. Even Germany took part.”

The Arab League chief acknowledged that some European countries still feel a moral obligation to support Israel due to historical persecution of Jews in Europe. However, he accused Israel of seeking territorial expansion at the expense of Arab nations.

Aboul Gheit also rejected US President Donald Trump’s proposal to transform Gaza into a “Middle Eastern Riviera,” calling it an act of “ethnic cleansing” that the Arab League “will not allow.”
