Araghchi: Iran-Russia Relations Have Expanded Significantly in Recent Years

17 December

Bilateral relations between Iran and Russia have grown substantially in recent years and gained new momentum with the signing of a comprehensive strategic partnership treaty. This was stated by the Islamic Republic’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi.

"Bilateral relations between Iran and Russia have expanded significantly over the past several years. This year in particular, with the signing of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Agreement between Iran and Russia, our cooperation has received a new impetus," he said during a press conference following talks with his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov.

He noted that economic ties are developing most actively, with many joint projects underway both in the energy sector—where activity is high—and in the field of transport. "The most important project is the North–South Transport Corridor and cooperation on the Rasht–Astara railway," he added.

Earlier, the Director of the Islamic Republic’s Transport Infrastructure Development Company, Houshang Bazvand, announced that an Iranian delegation will visit Russia within a month to sign a contract for the construction of the Rasht–Astara railway line.

In 2023, Russia and Iran concluded an agreement under the North–South Corridor project to jointly build the 160-kilometer Rasht–Astara section, which will ensure seamless transit access to Persian Gulf ports. The total project cost is €1.6 billion. Moscow and Tehran will jointly finance the design, construction, and supply of goods and services.
