Armenia and Azerbaijan agree on ceasefire in Nagorno-Karabakh

Armenia and Azerbaijan adopted a statement as a result of consultations in Moscow, the parties agreed on a ceasefire from 12:00 on October 10 for humanitarian purposes to exchange the prisoners as well as the deceased bodies. The text of the joint statement was read by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

 

 

The text notes that the document was adopted in response to the appeal of Russian President Vladimir Putin in accordance with the agreements of the heads of state of Russia, Armenia and Azerbaijan.

 

 

 

"It is declared a cease-fire from 12:00 on October 10, 2020, for humanitarian purposes for the exchange of prisoners of war and other detainees and the bodies of those killed through mediation and in accordance with the criteria of the Red Cross International Committee," the statement reads.

 

 

 

"The specific parameters of the ceasefire will be agreed upon additionally," the second paragraph of the document states.

 

 

 

In addition, Azerbaijan and Armenia agreed to start substantive negotiations through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs with the aim of achieving a peaceful settlement of the situation in Nagorno-Karabakh as soon as possible. "The Republic of Azerbaijan and the Republic of Armenia, through the mediation of the OSCE Minsk Group Co-Chairs, will start substantive negotiations with the aim of reaching a peaceful settlement as soon as possible", the document says.

 

 

 

"The sides confirm the invariability of the format of the negotiation process", the fourth paragraph of the statement stresses.

 

 

 

The foreign ministers of Azerbaijan and Armenia arrived in Moscow on Friday for consultations on Nagorno-Karabakh at the invitation of the Russian president. The talks between the foreign ministers of Russia, Azerbaijan and Armenia lasted more than 10 hours.
