ASEAN and Russia strengthen strategic cooperation

In a joint statement following their talks in Jakarta on Thursday, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Russia expressed their commitment to progressive and comprehensive cooperation, further promoting their strategic partnership. The statement highlighted the shared objectives of ASEAN and Russia in deepening their dialogue and cooperation.

 

"We agreed to continue progressive and comprehensive dialogue and cooperation between ASEAN and Russia," stated the foreign ministers of ASEAN and Russia, underscoring their determination "to advance their strategic partnership." They also affirmed their intent to enhance collaboration in countering terrorism and extremism, as well as addressing regional food security concerns.

 

The joint statement emphasized the importance of constructive cooperation within the United Nations framework, "upholding universally recognized principles of international law and the fundamental principles outlined in the UN Charter." "We stressed the significance of adhering to international law, including the principles of self-determination, sovereignty, territorial integrity, and refraining from the use or threat of force," the ministers stressed.

 

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's visit to Jakarta, which commenced on Wednesday, is part of his participation in ASEAN-related activities. His stay in Indonesia will extend until July 14. The Russian foreign ministry stated that Minister Lavrov will attend the meetings of foreign ministers in the Russia-ASEAN format on July 13, followed by the meetings of foreign ministers in the East Asia Summit and the ASEAN Regional Security Forum on July 14.
