Astana format meeting on Syria begins in Nur-Sultan

A regular international meeting on Syria in the Astana format began on Tuesday in Nur-Sultan with consultations between the Russian and Syrian government delegations, a TASS correspondent reports.


The Russian delegation is headed by Alexander Lavrentiev, Russian President's Special Representative for Syria, and the Syrian government delegation is headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Ayman Susan.

 

 

"We are pleased to welcome the Syrian delegation. As always, when we start consultations here in the Kazakh capital, we start with a meeting with our Syrian friends," Lavrentiev said. - "We have a lot to discuss. First of all, the situation which is taking place right now in Syria, the measures that we can take together in order to stabilize the situation".


The 17th international meeting on Syria in the Astana format is taking place in the Kazakh capital on December 21-22. The participants are expected to discuss the prospects of the work of the Syrian Constitutional Committee in Geneva, the current situation in Syria, the tasks of maintaining peace in the de-escalation zones in implementation of earlier agreements reached within the framework of the Astana process. During the event, a meeting of the Working Group on Forced Detainees is planned with the participation of the guarantor countries, as well as the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross
