Azerbaijan Launches Counterterrorism Operation in Border Areas Near Russia

Azerbaijani law enforcement agencies have launched a large-scale counterterrorism and crime prevention operation in regions bordering Russia, according to the state news agency Azertac.

 

The operation, codenamed "Border Shield," is being conducted under a mutual agreement reached between the interior ministers of Azerbaijan and Russia.

 

According to the report, the operation will continue until February 10 and involves the establishment of police checkpoints in Guba, Gusar, Khachmaz, Balakan, Zagatala, Gakh, Sheki, Oghuz, and Gabala districts in the northern and northwestern parts of Azerbaijan.

 

The primary objectives of the operation include strengthening border security, identifying and neutralizing members of transnational organized crime and terrorist groups, and cracking down on the illegal transport of weapons, explosives, and drugs.
