Baku finds it important to establish normal relations with Yerevan

10 August 2022

Azerbaijan considers it important to establish normal neighborly relations with Armenia, the country's Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov said on Wednesday at a briefing following talks with his Algerian counterpart Ramtane Lamamra.

"Azerbaijan's vision is aimed at the future of the region. We consider it extremely important to establish normal neighborly relations between the countries (Azerbaijan and Armenia - TASS). The only right way for these relations to be stable and healthy is that these relations must be based on norms and principles of international law," the head of the Azerbaijan MFA said.

According to him, Baku's position is based on the fact that the sides can move forward in the process of normalization of relations "based on the principles of mutual recognition of sovereignty, territorial integrity of each other and inviolability of international borders."

The situation around Nagorno-Karabakh escalated on September 27, 2020, when active hostilities broke out there. On November 9 of the same year, a trilateral statement was signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, which achieved the cessation of hostilities in the conflict zone. The Azerbaijani and Armenian sides halted their positions, a number of areas came under Baku's control, and Russian peacekeepers were deployed along the line of contact and in the Lachin corridor.

On August 3 of this year, the Azerbaijani defense ministry spread information about the death of an Azerbaijani army conscript soldier, as a result of Armenian illegal armed group's shooting at the positions of the republic's forces in the direction of Lachin region, located in the zone of Russian peacekeepers' responsibility. According to the defense ministry, the armed forces of Azerbaijan retaliated by conducting a military operation, as a result of which they took control of a number of dominant heights and destroyed the Armenian army's manpower and military equipment.
