Bangladesh Extends Gratitude to Rosatom for Successfully Building NPPs Amidst Adverse Conditions

26 September 2023

Bangladesh expressed its gratitude to the Russian state agency Rosatom for its efforts in constructing the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant (NPP). The country's Science and Technology Minister Yeafesh Osman conveyed this appreciation during his address at the 67th IAEA General Assembly.

Osman acknowledged Rosatom's dedication to the Ruppur NPP project, despite facing challenges related to political factors and the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized that Bangladesh is committed to upholding the highest standards of nuclear safety once the Ruppur NPP becomes operational.

The Ruppur NPP, featuring two VVER-1200 reactors, is situated approximately 160 kilometers from Bangladesh's capital, Dhaka. Bangladesh chose the Russian design with VVER-1200 reactors, a Generation III+ design compliant with international safety standards, for its inaugural nuclear power plant. Construction of the plant commenced in 2021, with Rosatom's engineering division overseeing the design and construction processes. The VVER-1200 reactors have a planned operational life of 60 years, extendable for an additional 20 years. Currently, construction work is underway on the plant's first and second power units.
