A high-level meeting on Iran’s nuclear issue, involving China, Russia, and Iran, has begun in Beijing under the chairmanship of Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu. Representing Russia at the talks is Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov, while Iran is represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi.
In addition to nuclear-related discussions, the participants are expected to explore ways to lift Western sanctions on Iran and strengthen trilateral cooperation within BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).
On March 7, US President Donald Trump stated that he had sent a message to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, proposing negotiations on Tehran’s nuclear program. However, Khamenei dismissed the idea, asserting that Iran would not engage in talks with Washington, as the US was solely focused on advancing its own interests.
The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was signed in 2015 between Iran and the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, plus Germany, to resolve the dispute over Tehran’s nuclear program. In 2018, during his first presidential term, Trump withdrew the US from the agreement and reinstated all sanctions on Iran that had been lifted under the deal’s terms.
