Mikhail Bogdanov, the Russian president's special representative for the Middle East and African countries and Russian deputy foreign minister, discussed on Friday with Riyad Haddad, Syria's ambassador to Moscow, the activities of the inter-Syrian constitutional committee, the Russian diplomatic office said.
"During the conversation, there was a detailed exchange of views on the development of the situation in and around Syria. Special attention was paid to the issues of promoting a political settlement in the Syrian Arab Republic on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 2254 with a focus on the activities of the inter-Syrian constitutional committee, whose sixth session of the drafting commission is currently taking place in Geneva," the statement on the website reads.
A number of topical issues on the agenda of the permanent Russian-Syrian commission on trade, economic, scientific and technical cooperation were also touched upon.
According to the commentary of the ministry, "Russian condolences were expressed to relatives and friends of the victims of the terrorist attack in Damascus on October 20 this year".
The meeting of the Constitutional committee of Syria was held on October 18 in Geneva. Civil society delegation member Mais Kreidy told RIA Novosti that the new round of talks of the small constitutional committee of Syria in Geneva is characterized by the possibility of dialogue and the absence of previous tensions.
There has been an armed conflict in Syria since 2011. Talks known as the "Astana format" (after the former name of the Kazakh capital) have been held in Nur-Sultan since 2017, and in January 2018 the Syrian National dialogue congress was held in Sochi, which was the first attempt since the beginning of the conflict to gather a wide range of participants on a common negotiating platform. The main result of the congress was the decision to create a constitutional committee, which works in Geneva and whose main task is to prepare a constitutional reform.
