Special Representative of the Russian President for the Middle East and Africa, Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov held discussions with Ambassador of Gabon in Moscow Joanna Rose Mamyaka concerning the situation in Gabon following a change in leadership. The Russian Foreign Ministry's message highlighted that the conversation covered various aspects, including the recent change in leadership, the formation of a new government in Gabon, and practical measures to enhance cooperation in trade, economics, investment, and humanitarian areas between Russia and Gabon. It's worth noting that this meeting was initiated by the Gabonese side.
To provide context, on August 30, a group of senior Gabonese military officers announced on national television that they had taken control of the country. These coup leaders invalidated the results of the August 26 presidential election, which had been won by the incumbent, Ali Ben Bongo Ondimba, who was seeking a third term. Subsequently, they appointed Bris Oligie Nguema as the head of state for a transitional period, with Raymond Ndong Sima leading the transitional government. The transition was anticipated to last for one to two years.
