Law enforcement officials of Kazakhstan are investigating 19 foreign citizens after the January riots. This was reported on Monday by Serik Shalabaev, head of the criminal prosecution service of the Prosecutor General's Office, at a meeting of the Majilis (lower house) of parliament.
"There are 19 foreign nationals in criminal proceedings. Among them are 11 citizens of Uzbekistan, four citizens of Russia, two from Kyrgyzstan and one person each from China and Tajikistan," he said.
According to him, their actions are evaluated on the facts of participation in mass riots and theft. "These figures are not final because the investigation is still ongoing," Shalabayev said.
In early January, mass riots broke out in Kazakhstan, with participants attacking police and military personnel. President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev warned of an attempted coup d'etat and asked for help from the CSTO. The situation stabilized by January 7, and the state of emergency was lifted countrywide on January 19. According to the authorities, 230 people were killed and more than 4,500 were injured as a result of these events.
