Chinese Ambassador: Putin’s Visit to China Is a Manifesto for Peace

29 August

The upcoming visit of President Vladimir Putin to China will be a major milestone for bilateral relations and stands as a declaration in support of peace, said Chinese Ambassador to Russia Zhang Hanhui in an interview published in the latest issue of “Evrazimut” magazine.

“This is a manifesto of our era in defense of peace and human progress,” Zhang commented. “It’s evidence that the traditional friendship between our peoples continues, and an important opportunity to learn from the past and build a better future—something with far-reaching significance. This event will doubtless be a landmark moment in the history of our two countries’ relations.”

The diplomat recalled that Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Russia in May for celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War. Soon, Putin will reciprocate with a visit to China to attend a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of China’s Victory in the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the end of World War II.

“These historic exchanges between our heads of state not only demonstrate the high level of China-Russia relations in this new era, but also pay deep respect to our shared past and the achievements of victory,” the ambassador emphasized.

A major parade is set for September 3 in Beijing, with President Putin, President Xi, and many other world leaders attending. The 70-minute ceremony will showcase the People’s Liberation Army’s main forces and new branches of the military—featuring 45 marching units as well as the latest missile technology, tanks, aircraft, and domestically-produced drones.

Large-scale events of this kind have taken place on Tiananmen Square since 1949, when the People’s Republic of China was founded. The last such parade of similar scale, involving about 15,000 participants, was held on October 1, 2019, to mark the nation’s 70th anniversary.
