More than 120 events have been included in the official plan for the 80th anniversary of Victory in the Great Patriotic War, approved by the Council of Heads of State of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).
“Some events have already taken place, but most are still ahead. National programs for commemorating Victory and key moments of the Great Patriotic War have also been adopted in CIS countries,” said Svetlana Malinina, head of the CIS Executive Committee’s press service, at a TASS press conference marking the start of applications for the 20th International Film Festival We Won Together, named after Vladimir Menshov.
According to Malinina, CIS capitals and major cities will host military parades, ceremonies honoring war veterans, home front workers, and veteran organizations, as well as anniversary concerts and other patriotic events. She highlighted the Memory Train project as a key cultural and educational initiative for young people. Launched in 2021 by the Federation Council of Russia and the Council of the Republic of Belarus, the project will take high school students from Belarus, Russia, and other CIS nations on a two-week journey from June 21 to July 5, visiting cities and historic sites connected to the war.
Malinina also emphasized the significant role state news agencies are playing in preparing for the anniversary. “In addition to extensive news coverage, interviews, and archival materials dedicated to Victory, state media agencies are collaborating on a joint photography exhibition. This exhibition will highlight the military and labor heroism of the Soviet people while countering attempts to distort historical truth about the war,” she said. The project, initiated by TASS, is being developed under the CIS Council of State News Agency Heads.
With 2025 officially declared the Year of the 80th Anniversary of Victory, the Year of Peace and Unity in the Fight Against Nazism within the CIS, TASS is planning a media tour covering several Russian hero cities and cities of military and labor glory. The tour is expected to include 30 media executives and journalists from leading CIS news agencies and outlets. “The CIS Executive Committee will work closely with TASS in carrying out this initiative,” Malinina added.
