CIS Hopes Washington Agreements Will Lead to Peace Treaty Between Armenia and Azerbaijan

19 August

The Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) hopes that the documents signed in Washington between Armenia and Azerbaijan will serve as a foundation for a lasting peace agreement, CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev said ahead of a meeting of the Council of Permanent Representatives of member states.

“As we once welcomed with satisfaction the signing of the intergovernmental border agreement between Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan, we now also warmly received the signing of this joint declaration. We believe it is one of the steps toward a final settlement of disputes and the achievement of a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia,” Lebedev said.

He added that such a peace agreement would enable the holding of higher-level CIS meetings in these countries more fully.

“I hope these republics can participate more actively in the activities of the Commonwealth of Independent States,” he emphasized.
