CIS Prosecutors General Sign Agreement to Combat Illegal Migration

21 October

Prosecutors General from Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) member countries have signed a cooperation agreement on combating illegal migration during their meeting in Dushanbe.

"This marks the first multilateral agreement among CIS Prosecutors General in 15 years," according to a statement from Russia's Prosecutor General's Office.

The officials emphasized that illegal migration poses significant threats to national and public security, undermines economic stability, and creates opportunities for terrorist organizations, extremist groups, and organized crime networks to operate across borders.

Russian Prosecutor General Alexander Gutsan highlighted that CIS leaders had prioritized regional security during the recent "Central Asia-Russia" summit, which has provided additional momentum for enhanced law enforcement cooperation. "We must follow our leaders' direction and fully utilize the Council's potential to effectively counter modern criminal challenges and threats," Gutsan stated.

The Dushanbe meeting brought together prosecution leaders from Armenia, Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan, along with deputy prosecutors general from Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan.

Prior to the 35th Coordination Council session, Tajik President Emomali Rahmon received the visiting prosecutors general attending the event, which coincides with the 30th anniversary of the CIS Prosecutors General Coordination Council.
