Council of CIS Foreign Ministers to discuss international and regional agenda in Astana

The Council of Foreign Ministers of CIS member states will discuss issues of the regional and international agenda at a session in the capital of Kazakhstan on Wednesday. In addition, the foreign ministers will consider draft documents to be submitted for signing at the summit of the Commonwealth and the meeting of the CIS Council of Heads of Government.


The meeting will be chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Mukhtar Tleuberdi. Earlier the official representative of the Kazakhstan's Foreign Ministry Aibek Smadiyarov said that the participants of the event will discuss the regional and international agenda and deepen cooperation between the foreign ministries.


Besides, the CIS foreign ministers are planned to discuss the draft documents to be signed at the upcoming CIS summit on October 14, as well as the meeting of the Council of Heads of Government of the Commonwealth, scheduled for October 28 in Astana.


On October 6, the official representative of the Russian MFA, Maria Zakharova, reported that Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov will take part in the meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers in the capital of Kazakhstan on October 12. According to her, the ministers will exchange opinions on current international and regional topics, perspectives of cooperation development in the organization and approve the plan of multilevel consultations within the CIS in 2023.


Apart from this, Zakharova reports that during the meeting Lavrov will inform his partners about the progress of the SMO and the results of the referendums on the four regions' accession. Apart from that, a special attention will be paid to the problems of ensuring the security of the Commonwealth and its external borders. Zakharova  has also pointed out that the meeting is expected to adopt a number of decisions in cultural, humanitarian, law enforcement and human rights spheres, in particular the action plan on the Year of the Russian language as a language of interethnic communication in the CIS in 2023 and the plan of priority measures in the field of humanitarian cooperation of the CIS member states in 2023-2024.


Kazakhstan is chairing the Commonwealth bodies this year. It is expected that at the summit President of the Republic Kassym-Jomart Tokayev will sum up the results of the work of the Kazakh side in this direction. In addition, it is planned that at the meeting of leaders of the association will be decided to transfer the presidency in the CIS next year to Kyrgyzstan and to hold the next meeting of the Council of Heads of State in Bishkek.
