Crown Prince of Kuwait dissolves parliament for early elections

22 June 2022

Kuwait's Crown Prince Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah dissolved the National Assembly (parliament) on Wednesday to hold early elections in the next few months, Al Arabiya reports.

"People are not satisfied with the work of the legislative and executive powers," he said. - "We did not interfere in their work, but we did not see any achievements from them either." According to the crown prince, there is constant squabbling, disagreement and attempts to "satisfy personal interests at the expense of the nation" in the political arena. "The crack in the relationship between the executive and the legislature is destroying it, and the lack of government's role in activity and accountability hinders the development process,"  Mishal Al-Ahmad added. - "Such situations threaten national unity and are not in the interests of citizens".

According to him, Kuwait is "a state of institutions with innovative expertise and a beacon for humanitarian work." "We will not deviate from, amend or violate the constitution," the crown prince stressed. - "Dangers and crises surround the country on all sides, and we are working to achieve national stability, the well-being of the people, and the affirmation of their unity".

Emir Nawaf Al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah delegated the crown prince to address the parliament.

For many years in Kuwait, the conflict between the elected parliament and the emir-appointed government, that is, between the so-called young and old elites, has been ongoing. The December 2020 parliamentary elections resulted in a 60 percent renewal of the 50-member National Assembly. A month later, MPs called the prime minister to account, accusing him of selecting unqualified and controversial figures for ministerial posts. The full government then resigned.

A new cabinet was formed in December 2021, again with a predominance of members of the ruling family. In April of this year, he [the prime minister] was forced to resign amid the threat to submit no-confidence votes  against him.
