CSTO Views Taliban as a Long-Term Political Force in the Region

19 May

The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) considers the Taliban movement to be a long-term political factor in Afghanistan and believes that increased engagement with the group is necessary to maintain regional stability, CSTO Secretary-General Imangali Tasmagambetov said during a meeting of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council in Bishkek.

“The Taliban regime has proven itself to be a lasting political force. Several CSTO member states—such as Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Russia—have intensified bilateral contacts with the Afghan authorities to promote social stability and maintain security in the country,” he said.

According to Tasmagambetov, the CSTO Secretariat considers it important to continue monitoring the situation in Afghanistan and to enhance coordination in countering threats originating from the country.

The CSTO Parliamentary Assembly Council meeting is being held in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, which holds the rotating CSTO presidency in 2025. The session is chaired by Vyacheslav Volodin, Speaker of the Russian State Duma and head of the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly.
