Damascus Airport Reopens for International Flights

07 January

For the first time since December 8, 2024, Damascus International Airport has resumed regular international flights, according to TASS, citing the airport’s information service.

"Yes, we’ve resumed receiving flights. A plane from Qatar is already en route," said a source, referring to a Qatar Airways flight departing from Doha.

Qatar had previously announced on January 2 that it would restore this route with a regular schedule of three flights per week. Additionally, a cargo flight from Riyadh landed at the airport earlier in the day.

According to Syrian Airlines, flights between Damascus and Dubai will commence on January 7. Another Syrian carrier, Cham Wings, is resuming daily flights to Sharjah.

Damascus Airport is currently the only one of Syria’s four airports operating at full capacity. Aleppo’s airport, the country’s second-largest, has extended its special operating regime until January 12, requiring special authorization for any arrivals or departures. Flights from the airports in Latakia and Al-Qamishli remain suspended until January 21.

Situation in Syria

In late November 2024, armed opposition groups launched a major offensive against Syrian army positions. On December 8, these forces entered Damascus, prompting Bashar al-Assad to resign as president and leave the country. On the same day, all Syrian airports and the country’s airspace were closed. Later, the airspace was reopened for transit flights, while the airports in Damascus and Aleppo only operated under special permissions.
