Damascus says Russia helped stabilize Syria

16 August 2022

Russia has helped the Syrian army seize the initiative and stabilize the situation in the country, Syrian Defense Minister Ali Mahmoud Abbas said.

"At the very least, I state that the initiative is now in our hands, the initiative is in the hands of the Syrian Armed Forces. This has been possible thanks to the resilience of our people and the help of the Russian Federation," Abbas said Tuesday during a meeting with Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu on the sidelines of the Moscow Conference on International Security.

At the same time, he noted that certain threats remain and that in order to eliminate them, Syria is ready to cooperate with Russia.

Speaking about Russia's contribution to the fight against international terrorism, Abbas stressed that the entry of a Russian military contingent into Syria was the only correct decision that allowed stabilizing the situation in the country.

"Russian friends are true friends who stood shoulder to shoulder with us in the fight against international terrorists. Now we want in turn to stand shoulder to shoulder with you," Abbas said.
