Death toll in clash on Afghan-Pakistani border reaches six

12 December 2022

At least six people were killed and 17 others wounded in a shelling on the Afghan-Pakistani border near the Spin Boldak-Chaman checkpoint. The Pakistani Defense Ministry's interagency public affairs office reported this on Sunday evening.

"On December 11, the Afghan Border Force opened unprovoked and indiscriminate fire on civilians in Chaman, Balochistan province, using heavy weapons, including artillery and mortars, killing six civilians and wounding 17 others," it said in a statement.

The agency said Pakistani border troops gave an "appropriate yet measured response to the misplaced aggression," while avoiding attacks on civilians in the area of the incident.

Afghanistan's Tolonews TV previously reported four dead and 20 wounded.

The Spin Boldak-Chaman checkpoint is a key point on the Pakistan-Afghanistan border where trade between the two countries takes place.

Armed clashes broke out at the checkpoint November 13, shutting down the land border between Afghanistan and Pakistan. The clashes resulted from Taliban firing at and killing a Pakistani border guard. As a result of the exchange of fire, three Taliban fighters (banned in the Russian Federation) were killed and another was wounded.
