Delegations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan discuss delimitation and demarcation of common border

15 November 2022

A regular joint meeting of the government delegations of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan on the delimitation and demarcation of the common border was held in Dushanbe on Monday. The meeting was chaired by the heads of the State Committees of National Security (SCNS) of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, Saimumin Yatimov and Kamchybek Tashiyev, the Tajik news agency Khovar reported.

A protocol was signed following the meeting. Its content was not disclosed. The parties agreed to hold another meeting on the territory of Kyrgyzstan.

On September 19 and 25, the heads of the SCNS of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan signed two protocols stipulating measures to end the military conflict on the border. The parties agreed to withdraw heavy military equipment and troops to the places of permanent deployment. An agreement was also reached to remove four border posts each located in the conflict zone.

In mid-September, hostilities broke out between Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan over several sections of the common border. According to the Tajik side, during the conflict more than 40 residents of the republic were killed. Bishkek reported 59 Kyrgyz citizens were killed.

The Tajik-Kyrgyz border is more than 980 km long, and dozens of disputed sections remain after the collapse of the Soviet Union. To date, more than 660 km of the border between the two countries have been agreed upon in the process of delimitation and demarcation. In some sections, there are occasional disputes and conflicts between residents of the border areas.
