Djibouti to Normalize Relations with Israel Only After Palestinian Statehood

23 May

The Republic of Djibouti may consider joining the Abraham Accords to normalize relations with Israel, but only after Palestine becomes an independent state. This was stated by Djiboutian President Ismail Omar Guelleh in an interview with Jeune Afrique magazine.

When asked whether Djibouti, as a member of the Arab League, is ready to join the Abraham Accords, Guelleh answered negatively. He emphasized that this position will remain unchanged “until the Palestinian people live freely in a viable and recognized state.” According to the president, the establishment of an independent Palestine is the “minimum requirement.”

President Guelleh believes that the missile strikes by the Yemeni rebel group Ansar Allah (the Houthis) against Israel were a response to Israel’s military operation in Gaza and the silence of Arab leaders. In his view, retaliatory bombings by Israel and the United States will not deter the Houthis.

He also noted the possibility that the US may have used its military base in Djibouti to conduct operations in the Red Sea.
