ECOWAS Expresses Readiness to Intervene in Niger if Diplomatic Efforts Falter

17 August 2023

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is prepared to start military intervention in Niger if diplomatic initiatives prove ineffective. This declaration was made by the Commissioner for Peace and Security of the ECOWAS Community, Abdel Fatau Musah, at the ongoing gathering of the Chiefs of General Staff of the Armed Forces from ECOWAS member states in Ghana.

"The ECOWAS joint contingent stands prepared for military intervention in Niger if diplomatic efforts prove unsuccessful," Musah was quoted as saying by Al Jazeera. He further noted that the community's member nations remain committed to exploring diplomatic avenues for resolving the issue. However, Musah remarked that the rebel forces currently in power in Niger are merely putting on a facade of willingness to engage in negotiations.

He added that ECOWAS is determined to reinstate constitutional order in Niger using all available means.
