Egypt has expressed deep regret over the United Nations Security Council's inability to adopt a resolution recognizing Palestine as a full member of the international organization, citing the use of the veto power by the United States.
In its statement, the Egyptian foreign ministry stated, "Egypt deeply regrets that, due to the US exercising its veto power, the Security Council was unable to adopt the resolution at a critical juncture when the Palestinian issue necessitates all countries to shoulder a historic responsibility regarding the rights and future of Palestinians."
Cairo asserts that the global community "must take a stand in support of Palestinian rights to create genuine conditions for the resumption of the peace process and ultimately resolve the Palestinian issue based on the establishment of two independent states." The Egyptian foreign ministry firmly believes that "hindering the fulfillment of Palestinians' right to statehood is inconsistent with the legal and historical responsibility entrusted to the international community to address the Palestinian problem."
On Thursday, the United States utilized its veto authority in the UN Security Council to block a draft resolution put forth by Algeria, which sought to admit Palestine as a full member of the global organization. While twelve members of the Security Council, including Russia and China, voted in favor of the resolution recommending Palestine's admission, Switzerland and Britain abstained.
