Egypt Sends Protest Note to UN Security Council over Launch of Ethiopia’s Renaissance Dam

09 September

Egypt’s Foreign Ministry has sent a letter to the UN Security Council protesting the official launch of Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a statement from the ministry.

“The Arab Republic of Egypt, through Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty, sent a letter to the president of the UN Security Council noting that the dam’s construction and commissioning constitute a violation of international law,” the document said. The ministry added that, in this connection, Cairo reserves the right “to take measures necessary to protect its national interests, as provided for by the UN Charter,” without specifying what those measures might entail.
