Egyptian FM Calls for UNSC Resolution on Gaza Stabilization Force

21 October

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty has urged the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution authorizing an international stabilization force for maintaining peace in the Gaza Strip.

"We urgently need a Security Council resolution to legitimize the international stabilization force and define its mandate and responsibilities," the foreign minister stated in an interview with UAE-based The National.

Describing the resolution as "crucial," Abdelatty emphasized Egypt's readiness to participate "in any formats that adhere to specific parameters" established by the document. He clarified that the primary role of both the proposed force and US President Donald Trump's earlier "Peace Council" initiative should be supporting Palestinians in self-governance rather than direct administration of the territory.

This follows Reuters' earlier report that US authorities have begun drafting plans for deploying an international stabilization force to Gaza. The National later specified the force would comprise at least 4,000 personnel from Egypt, Azerbaijan, Turkey, and Indonesia, operating with peacekeeping-level authority but without heavy weaponry. While American officials oppose formal UN peacekeeping status for the contingent, it would be tasked with establishing field hospitals, restoring critical infrastructure, and coordinating recovery efforts for Palestinian casualties alongside 3,000 local volunteers.
