24 August 2023

The invitation to join BRICS underscores Egypt's expanding role in the global economy, stated Ahmed Abu Zeid, the spokesperson for the Arab Republic's Foreign Ministry.

"The invitation to join BRICS confirms Egypt's increasing significance in the global economy and its capacity to contribute to a fairer and more comprehensive international economic system that considers the interests and contributions of developing economies from the Global South and their populations," the spokesperson stated in a statement published on the official social media page on X (formerly Twitter).

Previously, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi commended the BRICS' choice to include the Arab republic in the association starting January 1, 2024, and conveyed his aspiration for fruitful collaboration in the forthcoming period.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced the expansion of the alliance at the conclusion of the 15th BRICS summit, conducted from August 22 to 24 in Johannesburg. Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia and the UAE will become part of BRICS from January 1, 2024.
