Egyptian President to discuss strengthening relations with Putin in St. Petersburg

26 July 2023

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi is scheduled to meet with Russian leader Vladimir Putin in St. Petersburg on Wednesday during the second Russia-Africa summit.

In an official statement posted on its Facebook page (banned in Russia, owned by Meta Corporation, recognized as extremist in Russia), el-Sisi's office confirmed the president's visit to the Russian Federation for the summit. The statement highlighted the significance of strengthening the close ties between Egypt and Russia and emphasized their mutual interest in furthering cooperation and conducting in-depth consultations on various international and regional matters.

Russian presidential aide Yuri Ushakov revealed that the talks between Putin and el-Sisi are planned for Wednesday evening. The meeting is set to begin in the presence of journalists and will continue in a more close setting over dinner.

Notably, this will not be the first interaction between the two leaders. They previously engaged during the inaugural Russia-Africa summit in 2019, where el-Sisi expressed Egypt's confidence in Russia as a reliable partner for the African continent. The Egyptian president also conveyed his hope that Russia would actively engage in diverse spheres, particularly in development projects across Africa. The last phone conversation between the two presidents took place in March 2023.
