Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi held his first meeting with Syria's transitional leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the emergency summit of the Arab League, which took place in Egypt's New Administrative Capital. According to the Egyptian president's office, el-Sisi stressed the importance of “initiating a comprehensive political process” in Syria.
According to a statement published on the official Facebook page of the president's office (Facebook is banned in Russia, and its parent company Meta is designated as extremist in the Russian Federation), the Egyptian leader “underlined Egypt's commitment to supporting the Syrian people in achieving their aspirations” and highlighted “the importance of launching a comprehensive political process that includes all segments of the Syrian population, leaving no side excluded.”
El-Sisi also stressed “Egypt's interest in preserving the unity and territorial integrity of Syria” and reaffirmed his rejection of any encroachment on Syrian territory.
In response, “the Syrian president emphasized his desire to open a new chapter of fraternal relations with Arab countries, especially with Egypt,” according to the statement.
The March 4 summit marked the first meeting of Arab leaders where Syria was represented by al-Sharaa, who was appointed in late January as Syria’s transitional president.
