Embassy of Afghanistan in Moscow will continue its work under the republican flag

11 May 2022

The embassy of Afghanistan in Moscow has no plans yet to change the tricolor of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan for the flag of the Taliban movement (banned in Russia). This was reported to TASS on Wednesday by a source.

He said that the embassy would continue operating under the republican flag despite the handover of the diplomatic mission to Jamal Nasir Garval, the Taliban's envoy to Afghanistan in Moscow.

A TASS correspondent ascertained that the black-red-green flag of the republic is still raised over the embassy on Povarskaya Street.

On April 6, the Russian foreign ministry sent a note to the Afghan embassy recognizing Jamal Nasir Garval as chargé d'affaires of Afghanistan in Moscow. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova described it as a step towards the resumption of full-fledged bilateral diplomatic contacts, emphasizing that it is still premature to talk about official recognition of the Taliban regime in Afghanistan. On April 29, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said that the chargé d'affaires of Afghanistan in Moscow had already started his work.

In March, the Taliban obliged the state structures to use the white flag of the "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" with the black shahada (testimony of faith, a calligraphic inscription in Arabic - TASS) instead of the old state flag.

The Taliban launched a large-scale operation to take control of Afghanistan after the US announced the decision to withdraw its armed forces from the country. On August 15, 2021, the Taliban entered Kabul without a fight and President Ashraf Ghani left the republic. On September 6, the Taliban claimed control of all Afghan territory, and on September 7 they announced the composition of the provisional government, the legitimacy of which has not yet been recognized by any country.
