Erdoğan: Turkey Using All Diplomatic Tools to Broker Russia–Ukraine Peace

29 May

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has reaffirmed Ankara’s commitment to facilitating a peaceful resolution to the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, stating that Turkey remains in close contact with both sides and will continue to utilize its full diplomatic capacity to end the war.

“We are committed to peace and will persist in our efforts,” Erdoğan told reporters accompanying him on his return from Azerbaijan, as cited by Anadolu Agency. “We are in contact with both Russia and Ukraine. We view the current momentum in dialogue as a real opportunity for lasting peace. We must not let this window of opportunity close.”

Erdoğan underscored Turkey’s role as an active mediator and stressed the humanitarian and strategic imperatives of ending the conflict. “Extinguishing this large fire in our region is both a humanitarian obligation and aligned with our national interest,” he said.

The Turkish leader expressed optimism regarding ongoing peace efforts, stating, “We hope the desired compromise can be reached through the current diplomatic initiatives.”

Erdoğan also pointed to the broader geopolitical consequences of the war, noting its impact on Europe’s security architecture and energy policies. “The entire world has seen how this war has fundamentally altered Europe’s security and especially its energy policy. The European Union is now seeking ways to reduce its dependency on Russian energy,” he said, adding that this trend boosts the geopolitical relevance of transit countries like Turkey.
