Erdoğan Vows Legal Action Against Attempts to Undermine Turkey’s Economy

26 March

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has issued a warning that any attacks on the country’s democracy or attempts to sabotage the economy will be met with legal consequences.

“From now on, all forms of economic sabotage will be prosecuted. Those who seek to divide our nation will face justice. This is not about blind hostility or revenge—it is about protecting the national will and upholding the state,” Erdoğan declared during a parliamentary address to members of his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP), as broadcast by TRT Haber.

His remarks come amid ongoing tensions following the arrest of Istanbul’s opposition mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu. Erdoğan accused Imamoglu and his associates of corruption, claiming they were involved in the theft of sensitive personal data and the misappropriation of millions of Turkish lira. “If we made a TV series about the corruption in Istanbul’s opposition-led municipalities, it would have more twists and turns than a Brazilian soap opera,” he remarked.

Erdoğan also called on the opposition to halt protests, denouncing what he described as street violence and efforts to incite chaos. “We expect the judiciary to do its duty, and those found guilty must face justice,” he emphasized.
