Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) has rejected opposition claims that the arrest of Istanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu amounts to an attempted coup.
The accusation was made by Özgür Özel, leader of the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), which İmamoğlu represents.
"Özgür Özel cannot accuse us of plotting a coup," AKP spokesperson Ömer Çelik told reporters, challenging the opposition leader to provide evidence. Çelik also stated that he had no information on the specifics of the case against İmamoğlu.
The Istanbul Prosecutor’s Office is conducting investigations into corruption and alleged ties to terrorism. As part of the probe, 87 out of 106 suspects, including İmamoğlu, were detained on Wednesday.
