Russian mediation in negotiations between Iran and the United States benefits the Islamic Republic, as Moscow is a friend and strategic partner of Tehran. This opinion was expressed in a conversation with TASS by Iranian political analyst and security expert, Professor Ruhollah Modabber.
“Russian mediation in negotiations between Iran and the US is an excellent decision. Russia and its president, Vladimir Putin, are true friends of Iran. They can help ease tensions between Tehran and Washington and properly convey Iran’s interests to the United States. Russian mediation is beneficial for Iran,” the expert said.
“Unfortunately, pro-Western factions in Iran would prefer to see the mediation handled by the European trio — the UK, Germany, and France,” Modabber added. “That would be a mistake, as these 'trio' has consistently deceived Tehran and pursued a hostile policy toward the Islamic Republic.”
Earlier, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Russia had agreed to assist the administration of US President Donald Trump in contacts with Iran on issues related to the Iranian nuclear program. According to the sources, Trump made the request during a phone call with Putin on February 12. The Kremlin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, told TASS that Russia believes all issues between the US and Iran should be resolved through negotiations.
