The Fatah movement, led by Palestinian National Authority (PNA) President Mahmoud Abbas, is calling on Hamas to step down from governing Gaza, Fatah spokesperson in Gaza Monther al-Hayek said, according to the WAFA news agency.
Hayek argued that Hamas' presence has become a liability for the Palestinian cause and urged the group to reconsider its stance. He called on Hamas to heed the voices of people in Gaza and make way for the PNA and the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) to assume governance responsibilities.
“We urge Hamas to listen to our people's demands and withdraw from the political scene in Gaza so that the PNA and PLO can fulfill their duties,” Hayek stated.
Gaza came under Israeli control after the Six-Day War in 1967, during which Israeli settlements were established in the area. In 2005, Israel unilaterally withdrew from the enclave, evacuating all its settlements and military forces. Control of Gaza was handed over to the PNA, which also governed the West Bank. However, after Hamas won the Palestinian parliamentary elections, tensions between the group and the more moderate Fatah escalated, leading to a political split. Hamas ultimately seized full control over Gaza.
