Fierce Fighting Erupts in Southwestern Somalia

28 July

Heavy clashes have broken out between forces from the unrecognized autonomous region of Jubaland and Somali federal troops in the city of Beled Hawo, in the southwest of the country, the Garowe news outlet reports, citing local sources.

“Fierce fighting has once again erupted in Beled Hawo between Jubaland forces and the Somali federal government,” the publication writes.

According to reports, the most intense combat since the start of the standoff flared up on Monday near the outskirts of the city and around a British military camp that serves as a base for federal troops. Communication lines in the region have also reportedly been damaged.

Back in December 2024, Somali forces withdrew from parts of Jubaland after suffering heavy casualties in clashes with local militants. Initially, the federal government had sent troops into Jubaland following the re-election of the region’s leader, Ahmed Islam Mohamed Madobe, for a fourth term. Later, a Mogadishu court issued an arrest warrant for Madobe on charges of treason.

Against this backdrop, Jubaland has refused to recognize amendments made to Somalia’s constitution in March 2024 and has severed ties with the federal government.
