Russia cannot station border guards on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border because of the lack of international legal registration and the parties' lack of trust, Deputy Director of the Information and Press Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Bikantov said on Thursday.
Earlier, acting Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan suggested placing Russian border guards' strongholds along the entire length of the border with Azerbaijan.
"One of the problems of implementing the deployment of border guards along the border is the lack of international legal registration, which is superimposed on the lack of mutual trust of the parties," Bikantov said at a briefing.
According to him, sustainable de-escalation on the border can be achieved only through the immediate launch of work on the delimitation of the border between Armenia and Azerbaijan with its subsequent demarcation.
Shootings on the Armenian-Azerbaijani border resumed on July 28. Baku claimed that Armenia had violated the ceasefire agreement. Yerevan claimed three dead and five wounded Armenian servicemen during an exchange of fire on the border area with Azerbaijan in Gegharkunik region. The parties later confirmed a cease-fire agreement on the border. According to the Armenian military department, the agreement was reached through the mediation of Russian peacekeepers.
