Foreign Ministry calls global reaction to Afghanistan crisis shocking

18 August 2021

Not only the humanitarian disaster that is unfolding in Afghanistan is shocking, but also the reaction of the democratic world to it, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova.

"What is the Western world doing? <...> Here are the very NATO countries, the EU, which have been restoring order there for 20 years. <...> Are they sending planes? <...> Don't they just set up camps for refugees and give money to NGOs that help? No, it's much more interesting - they publish a statement on the website of the Department of State calling not to close the border crossings, leave the roads and airports open," the diplomat stressed on the air of SolovievLive.

As an example of shocking behavior, she cited the Estonian prime minister's statement that Tallinn was ready to accept ten Afghan refugees.

"The Secretary-General of NATO, analyzing the situation in Afghanistan and recognizing it in general as disastrous, <...> put the responsibility for the collapse that had occurred on the political leadership of Afghanistan. <...> That is, for 20 years NATO, the US has been engaged in the creation and preparation of political forces in Afghanistan and was responsible for this very segment. And now they are laying the responsibility on Afghanistan's political leadership. <...> What can you call it? <...> These are values," concluded Zakharova.

Against the background of the withdrawal of the US contingent from the republic, the rebels occupied all major cities and border crossing points in a few weeks, they entered Kabul on August 15. President Ashraf Ghani announced his resignation and left the country. Within hours, the Taliban announced that the 20-year war was over and that a new form of government would soon be defined; they would not agree to a transitional government. A migration crisis began in the region.

"The Taliban is a terrorist organization banned in Russia.
