Foreign Ministry names condition for recognition of new Afghan authorities

01 September 2021

For Moscow to recognize Afghanistan's new authorities, it is necessary to wait for the formation of a new inclusive government, there is no hurry, Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Morgulov said in an exclusive interview with RIA Novosti.

"Regarding the issue of official recognition, we must first wait for the formation of a new government (of Afghanistan), in which all political forces, including ethnic minorities, would be represented, and then determine its position. There is no hurry here," Morgulov said.

"I think we shouldn't dramatize the situation in Afghanistan. The new authorities announced the end of hostilities, a general amnesty for government officials, declared their intentions to create a coalition inclusive government, to respect women's rights, of course, within the framework of the Islamic legal system, and to preserve media freedom. Also, importantly, they declared their desire to eradicate drug production in the country. We assess all this as positive signals and are waiting for their implementation in practice," Morgulov said.

According to Morgulov, Moscow sincerely hopes that the "involved sides" will manage to reach a political consensus and that "the new state structure will be formed taking into account the interests of the whole Afghan people.
