The Russian Foreign Ministry clarified the data on the Russians kidnapped by pirates during the seizure of the Water Phoenix ship in Nigeria.

Earlier, the Russian Embassy in Nigeria said that two Russians were kidnapped by pirates during the seizure of the ship Water Phoenix, and diplomats are making efforts to free them.

"According to information received, on September 8, in the Gulf of Guinea, 28 nautical miles from the city of Lagos (Nigeria), a pirate attack was made on the Water Phoenix refrigerator ship under the flag of Liberia, owned by the Dutch transport company Citrade Groningen. Two Russian citizens were taken hostage – the ship's captain S. Giletsky and senior assistant V. Cormin. The remaining sixteen sailors managed to avoid being kidnapped, " the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

The Ministry added that after receiving information about the incident, the Russian Embassy in Abuja is in constant contact with the Nigerian authorities. "Operational communication with representatives of the shipowner is established. Currently, all necessary measures are being taken to release Russian sailors from pirate captivity as soon as possible," the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
